Following the merger of the Nationwide and Portman building societies in 2007, Nationwide Specialist Lending was created, bringing together two specialist lending brands - The Mortgage Works and UCB Home Loans.

The business has recently reviewed this strategy of having two specialist lending brands and concluded that, in current market conditions, focusing on developing a single brand is a more appropriate approach. As a result, new mortgage business was suspended from 31st October 2008.
